Painted Beach Stones

Painted Beach Stones

A few years ago, I found a painted rock while walking on the bike path in town. When I turned it over, it said, “Marblehead rocks kindness”

I had heard about this movement and was thrilled to have found one.

It was one of those small, unexpected moments that brightens your whole day.

Usually, when I’m out for a walk, my kids tell me that I always “make them stop” and look at EVERYTHING… but I wasn’t looking for this. It just caught my eye and I was immediately drawn by the happiness I felt when I found it.

In that moment, I realized I was part of something bigger—a quiet, hidden network of kindness weaving through the community-simply to make someone smile. Who doesn’t want more of that? Spread joy? Yes please. I am in. I knew that I wanted to participate, so I started painting them. (I’ve even been encouraged to sell them at some of my shows, but it’s not as exciting as hiding the ones around town)

For the past few years, and only in August, I hide them around town, tucking them into corners where someone might stumble upon them unexpectedly.

It makes me genuinely happy to participate in this movement, knowing that each rock might spark a smile, brighten a day, or quietly remind someone that kindness is still alive in the world.

Whether you slip it into your pocket to keep as a reminder, tuck it somewhere new for the next person to find, or gift it to someone who needs a lift, you carry with you not just the rock, but the spirit behind it: that even the smallest gesture can ripple outward, spreading joy in ways we might never see.
